Essay The Great Gatsby - 2606 Words
The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby belongs to what Harold Bloom tags the ââ¬Å"tombâ⬠of literary archetypes, a family of fiction that espouses every facet of the expressive use of language (everything from Shakespeareââ¬â¢s plays to Dickensââ¬â¢ prose). As a participant in this tomb, The Great Gatsby has adopted a convenient persona in the world of twentieth century literature as ââ¬Å"the great American novel,â⬠a work that embodies the American thematic ideals of the self-made man, the great American characterââ¬âJay Gatsby. In its infancy, the novel received only a taste of the ââ¬Å"epic grandeurâ⬠that it would later accumulate. Snubbed by certain critics for its all-too-perfect design and shrugged aside by the popular masses,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The first appeared in The New York World just two days after publication and was headed ââ¬Å"F. Gorman of the New York Sun. One of the most flattering reviews appeared at a time when the first wave of critical jubilation had all but subsided into a quieter appreciation. Gilbert Seldes declared in the August Dial that the ââ¬Å"The Great Gatsby is a brilliant work, and it also a sound one; it is carefully written, and vivid; it has structure, and it has life. To all the talents, discipline has been added.â⬠[2] Seldes goes on to say that ââ¬Å"Fitzgerald has more than matured; he has mastered his talents and gone soaring in a beautiful flight, leaving behind him everything dubious and tricky in his earlier work, and leaving even farther behind all the men of his own generation and most of his elders.â⠬ [3] He then goes on to praise Fitzgerald s ability to explore a tiny section of lifeâ⬠¦with irony and pity and aShow MoreRelated Great Gatsby1497 Words à |à 6 PagesIn chapter 3 of The Great Gatsby Nick is invited to one of Gatsbyââ¬â¢s extravagant parties. Should Public Schools Require Uniforms Essay - 2356 Words
When I was a child attending elementary school all of my friends loved the way I dressed, but there was also other children that attended school with me that seemed inferior to me simply because of how I dressed. Usually the children that praised the way I dress always wore nice clothes themselves, while the others who didnââ¬â¢t dress ad nice would try to pick fights or make fun of children that did dress nice. Later on in my life as I approached high school the tables turned; the teenagers who dressed nice became the ones who picked on other students in school because of the low quality clothes certain students wore in school, this would result in student violence. Peter Oââ¬â¢Brian COLL/148 Due: October 7, 2012 Week 5 Leadership Outline: 100 point I. Introduction My project is about Peter Oââ¬â¢Brian who completed the same major as myself but also doubled it with film. Something I look to doing in the near future. We will write a custom essay sample on Leadership Outline or any similar topic only for you Order Now Oââ¬â¢Brian has a BA in Communications and in Film he is a Canadian Producer and is considered ââ¬Å"perhaps one of Canadaââ¬â¢s best-known film producersâ⬠(Kayne, 2003). Oââ¬â¢Brian is someone I aspire to be because of his background with my degree and with my passion for film. Oââ¬â¢Brian has overcome many obstacles and has built a beautiful foundation for future entrepreneurs to follow. Oââ¬â¢Brian is an expert in communications because he had to market himself to get funding for his films, he had to have Public relations abilities to self-promote his films and he had to gain an expertise in what he was doing. II. Your Field of Study I chose to do Communications because I liked the options for a career that came with it. With a Bachelorââ¬â¢s degree it gives me credibility for work I already do and can be combined with a degree such as film to make me the well rounded person I aspire to be. My expected graduation timeline is the spring of 2014 or that winter. I hope to graduate within this timeframe because of the projects I have planned for the same year. In order to get in that timeframe I will have to take extra classes and really push myself academically to achieve this. III. Who is the leader I chose Peter Oââ¬â¢Brian because he is a personal idol of mine and because his education background helped me when deciding my own. Oââ¬â¢Brian has a reputation of being a film maker who demonstrates in his movies relativeness and connections with the people who see his films. He illustrates characters that anyone can look up to and aspire to be. For film he has won 19 genie awards (Canadian Film Encyclopedia) and for communications he has demonstrated public relations skills to be his own publicist. IV. Characteristics of an effective leader An effective leader is creative and opened to new ideas (Vulliamy, 2010). I think Oââ¬â¢Brian has clearly demonstrated that. He has created his own production company and sits on many boards to better himself and his business (Canadian Film Encyclopedia). V. Define Your Leadership Qualities My leadership qualities are: being passionate/dedicated, assertive, magnanimity and open minded. My strengths are generating great ideas and getting people pumped to take action. From taking a personality test (Personality Test Center) from this course Iââ¬â¢ve learned that I fit into the career I have planned for myself. I also realized that I love to start projects but am not always so keen on finishing them; which is a HUGE problem for me. One personal strength I possess, that can help support success in the future, is that I am great at public speaking. I know how to handle myself in the public setting and also love the environment. A weakness it finishing projects, I love to get them started but when it comes to the middle work I drag. I love the ending work when all the middle work is done but it is a matter of being in the mood to do it. I am going to improve on this by at least trying to start or force myself to make head way and not wait to become ââ¬Å"inspiredâ⬠because that also can lead to procrastination of the project in itself. VI. Conclusion Peter Oââ¬â¢Brian is an evolutional film maker and self-publicist. He is someone I aspire to be like and with his success I feel that he can help motivate me to action and become the person I want to be. His educational background and the one I am pursuing go hand in hand and I feel that he is someone I can look up to. References Kaye, Janice. (2003, September 1). Response Essay free essay sample
Author Greg Graffin presents a clear thesis and supports it well with logical examples and sound reasoning. However, I also found parts of the essay confusing which makes me wonder about the intended audience of the piece. ââ¬Å" Anarchy in the Tenth Gradeâ⬠examines how people can relate to being alienated from certain groups, and how the author found his sense of self. Graffin supports this idea, pointing out that he feels a kinship with everyone who shares any alienated trait. He believes that even though people have never heard of nor met each other, alienation links them in their challenge to institutions and to dogmatic thinking. Graffin found his sense of self through music, but not through the same bands as his peers. While everyone else was listening to Led Zepplin, Rush, and Kiss, he was listening to ââ¬Å" Rodney on the Roqâ⬠who played local bandsââ¬â¢ music that shared their alienation and confusion. We will write a custom essay sample on Response Essay or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Generally, I found Graffinââ¬â¢s argument convincing. First, he offers several examples to support his thesis by reflecting back on his own life. For example, he explains in the reading how he grew up ââ¬Å"punkâ⬠, and the he did not quite fit in. He tells us that there were only three punkers in his school, ââ¬Å"And all of us got our asses kicked because of our musical prefence. â⬠This scared him, but at the same time it made him feel powerful. He goes on saying that growing up this way affected him. He had to unlearn these bad traits just to have a normal, loving relationship. Graffinââ¬â¢s sense of not being the same as others penetrated deeper than what he observed in the world around him. Even, his hair, was wrong, too fluffy to conform to standard rock hairdo. His opposition to his adolescent environment was forced , and even included the clothing of his peers. Unlike the wealthier students , he had to wear Payless Shoes and velour shirts from Kmart. Note how important brand names are in defining identity in Graffins reading. What one wore and what one could afford, or what oneââ¬â¢ parents could afford, was equated with an individualââ¬â¢s sense of self. What else was interesting was that Graffin showed us that by having his ââ¬Å" punkâ⬠trait made him the man he is today. He explained that interacting with music, he learns that his involvement counts. Though he may be unsure of his future , or his place, right now he finds solace in punk. Fitting in and rebelling, both must be parts of growing up and parts of human interaction. Finding our place has much to do with a sense of self and view of what makes up our authentic self. This showed me that whatever traits you have makes you the person you are right now. That whether this is genetic or learned is unkown. I found this reading also confusing. Even though Graffin did explain his thesis, he did not do so until the end of the reading. This made the reading somewhat boring. Garffin talked about his life the entire time and it did not make a point until the very last paragraph. I felt that he did not plainly state who this readingsââ¬â¢ audience was. I f he would of, somehow, stated his thesis in the beginning than started to talk about his life experiences it would have made the reading more interesting.

Penguin Paradise free essay sample
Every eight-year-old girl has a dream. Many want to be princesses, some want to be cowgirls, a few want to be president. Me? I wanted to see the penguins. So, at a time when most of my friends were spending their money on Barbie dolls and colorful hair ties, I was saving for a trip to New Zealand. A small and relatively unknown island off the coast of New Zealand, Snares Island is home to some 25,000 penguins. When I first heard of this isolated penguin paradise, my eight-year-old heart was captured and I was determined that, one way or another, I would see those penguins. It turns out that Snares Island is a ââ¬Å"minimum impact island,â⬠which means that no matter how much I saved or how long I waited, the chances of my actually visiting werenââ¬â¢t good. But thatââ¬â¢s the beauty of being eight the whole world is in your grasp, and any goal can be achieved if you try hard enough. We will write a custom essay sample on Penguin Paradise or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page So, I hatched a plan to visit Snares Island. I didnââ¬â¢t have a bank account, but I did have a small MM piggybank. I spent my days working hard to earn money, and my evenings figuring out how much more I needed to earn each year to take the trip when I turned 18. I weeded my momââ¬â¢s garden, made my brotherââ¬â¢s bed, and killed spiders for my sister, then put every hard-earned dime into that bank. With the help of my parents, I looked at plane tickets, figuring in some rough form of inflation. Every day, I would look at my progress and congratulate myself on being one step closer to penguin paradise. Obviously, my trip hasnââ¬â¢t taken place, and due to the restrictions on visiting Snares Island, I doubt it ever will. For months, though, my world revolved around what would have been my favorite place. And while my ten-year plan slowly disappeared, and those hard-earned dimes were spent on more ephemeral things, the memory of Snares Island stays with me. I look back now and laugh at my naive determination to achieve the near impossible, but more than that, I look back and admire that girl who had the audacity to work for what she wanted. Even if the only penguin I ever see is at the zoo, some of that little girl will stay with me: her appreciation for nature, and her determination to make her place in the world. Her surprising organization and planning still drive me through high school. And even now, when my favorite place has moved from New Zealand to the Rocky Mountains, whenever I see a penguin, I canââ¬â¢t help but remember and smile. Other girls may have outgrown their princess, cowgirl, or president phases, but I refuse to outgrow my penguin phase because, maybe, just maybe, the world is still in my grasp, goals can be achieved, and after all, someoneââ¬â¢s got to go see those penguins!

The death of John Proctor Essays
The death of John Proctor Essays The death of John Proctor Paper The death of John Proctor Paper Mary is brought before the judges and so are the other girls. The judge puts in Marys mind that satan has got hold of her or all the girls are positively lying. Abigail is also questioned by the judge and lies, the judge cannot understand why Abigail would want Proctors wife dead. Mary is put through tests by the judges even being asked to faint on command which she finds impossible to do, she is goaded by Parriss who knows his reputation is totally at stake. Abigail knowing that she could be found out as being a deceitful liar storms up to the judge and questions him as to whether he believes them. Abigail then starts to shake and pretend that Mary is afflicting her. John Proctor by this time has seen enough and admits to making love to Abigail and calls her a whore. The judge asks Abigail if Proctor is telling the truth but Abigail denies without saying anything. Good Wife Proctor is called for by the judge to touch the bottom of this swamp but Goody Proctor has to admit that she threw Abigail out for harlotry. Both John and Abigail had to turn their backs away from Goody Proctor and we have to remember that John had told the court that his wife never lies. The judge asks Goody Proctor about the dismissal of Abigail Williams and she tells the judge she dissatisfied me and my husband. Goody being a good Christian didnt wish to tell the court that her husband had been adulterous and when asked by the judge if her husband was an adulterer she replied no. This was the first lie Goody Proctor had told in the whole of her life. Goody Proctor then learns the terrible truth that John has told the court about his liaison with Abigail and she looks on in dismay not believing that she has done this to her husband. Hale actually believes Proctor is telling the truth, I feel that Hale realizes at this point that Goody Proctor was lying for the first time because when Hale went to Proctors house and asked John Proctor to repeat his Commandments he missed out adultery and now realizes that he must have blocked the adultery with Abigail out of his mind. Now Abigail knows that she has got away with her lies and deceit and at t this point Abigail starts screaming to divert the courts attention saying Mary has the Devil in her The girls repeat everything Mary is saying, pretending she is making them do this. At this point Mary sees that if she doesnt save herself nobody else can and she turns and says the Devil came to her and told her to give her name to stop his wife from hanging. Mary has now condemned John Proctor. Hale tries to intervene but is cut down by the judge. John Proctor says the judge is pulling heaven down and raising up a whore he then screams God is Dead. Abigail seeing that Hale could be a problem for her goes to the judge telling him that Hales wife is a witch but the judge tells her you are mistaken child, understand me this is a warning shot to Abigail that she is going too far. John Proctor is sent to jail and his visitor is Abigail Williams who wants to have him set free and go away with her on a ship. She realizes that all her plans have been thwarted and she never dreamed John would end up in jail. Abigail says that the jailer on her word will set him free and they can board a ship for Barbados together. John Proctor replies to her offer with the words it is not on a ship we will meet again Abi but in hell. The perpetrator of all the things that happen in Salem leaves, Abigail Williams with stolen money disappears. Reverend Parriss now sees that something must be done to save the lives of John, Rebecca Nurse and Martha Corey. The judge says that if Proctor confesses to being a witch then there will be an end to the deaths. Hale goes to Goody Proctor to inform her that her husband is marked to die and that John must just tell a lie to stop the hanging and begs Goody to get John to lie. Goody knows her husband will not lie to save his soul and promises nothing but asks to speak with her husband alone. They talk of their baby not yet born and their boys. John knows he is about to die but says he is thinking to confess just to be done with the problem. Goody says she will accept whatever he does. John says it is hard to give a lie to dogs and that it is only spite that makes him stay silent. Goody replies whatever you will do its a good man does it she says she has her own sins to deal with. Goody admits to keeping a cold house and asks for his forgiveness. John shouts to the courts I want my life The next problem begins when the judges want a signed confession that is to be pasted on the door of the church. He is asked if he saw Rebecca Nurse and others with the devil, John cannot lie and so he says that he saw no-one with the Devil. Hale pleads with the judge to let Proctor just sign his own confession which Proctor does but then reality strikes him and he argues that he cannot bring his boys up to be good men if this lie is pasted to the church door. He pleads that he has given this court his soul could they not leave him with his name. Proctor tears up the piece of paper with his signature on in and condemns himself to death. Hale pleads with Goody to change Johns mind and Goody replies he has his goodness now God forbid I take it from him. Three innocent people are sent to be hanged and now we see the village people look on in total silence. This play showed peoples greed, ignorance, arrogance, hatred and all centred around one girls unrequited love for a married man. It showed the good people dying whilst the tormentors stood by and gloated. It showed us how the might of the many blows away reality. Mass hysteria of young girls convinced grown men, mature judges that Salem was the Devils playground.

Summary of The X-files and the Aesthetics and Politics of Postmodern Essay
Summary of The X-files and the Aesthetics and Politics of Postmodern Pop - Essay Example ion is presented, with contrasts made between modernist notions of the art artifact and the largely kitsch or disregarded artistry that emerged in the television medium. Within the early incarnations of television itââ¬â¢s argued that there were largely traditional representations of reality that occurred within well-defined genre conventions. During the late 1980s the establishment of increased networks allowed for increased experimentation. It was in this wave of stylistic change that shows such as the X-Files emerged and subverted traditional genre and television assumptions. As the research article progresses Kellner considers specific elements of the X-Files that subvert these genre conventions and implement the post-modern aesthetic. One of the indications of these subversions is the implementation of traditional gender characterizations of the two main characters. Kellner notes, ââ¬Å"This conventional delineation between reason and faith, science and the paranormal, functions critically in The X-Files since the usual gender associations are reversedâ⬠(Kellner, pg. 4). Another major subversive element the article notes is the implementation of complexity and ambiguity. Itââ¬â¢s argued that the showââ¬â¢s implementation of these elements goes against traditional genre standards and as such represent one of the major enjoyment elements of the series. The article then goes on to consider how the series wavers between modernist and post-modernist notions of aesthetic production. In the third section of the article, Kellner examines pastiche as social critique within the series. One of the main examinations in these regards are the psychological and mythological elements related to the implementation of various monsters. E-Learning and Business Training - Essay Example The aims of this research are to describe the use of educational technologies in a business management context. That is, we seek to understand if business training methods and educational directives are supported by e-learning, adaptive to e-learning, and provide the appropriate tools, training and resources to students and business professionals that may use E-learning as a training resource. The research study expects to reveal opportunities businesses to develop E-learning training strategies. Management theory and E-Learning research are used to understand obstacles and opportunity in reaching training goals. This paper makes a conclusion that business management often involves stages that overlap between the training and employee growth, as well as knowledge and information management. Business needs traditionally include: cost management, scheduling, equity and debt. When a business hires an employee, that employee must be trained, and very often there are continuous training needs, like annual diversity training or monthly sales training. The nature of the research proposal is to use input from multiple sources to understand and identify E-learning training management models. Information will be gathered from books, journal articles and individual surveys. This will allow for evidence to support activities of E-Learning in business training. The resources necessary to complete this research is the development and distribution of the survey, as well as book, journal and other historical evidence.

Seminar in Macroeconomic Theory Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Seminar in Macroeconomic Theory - Assignment Example Fund raised will be used to cover the allocation the health sector that is a principal consumer of the federal budgetary provisions. Another strategy will involve the Congress amending the constitution to include a provision requiring the federal government to prepare a balanced budget. While trying to promote a more balanced budget through constitutional amendments, it is critical note that poorly crafted changes can trigger instances of economic instability. Any draft amendment should have an element of limited flexibility catering for emergency situations like a recession. As a measure, the federal government ought to encourage the establishment and registration of businesses in the USA. This will put the USA federal government in a better position to grows revenue to support its ever increasing expenditure. Homegrown companies should be encouraged to base their manufacturing firm within the states instead of operating their factories oversee. This will reduce the level of economic unemployment and the government will in turn reap in the form of more taxes. The federal government has an obligation of controlling to control its borrowing. Borrowing increases the government obligation in the form of the interest payable on these loans. The defense department and the intelligence department have been conveniently decreased measure to reduce the cost incurred in many operations conducted by these departments. The wars in Middle East and international missions are the cause of the high expenditures here; these can be reduced to manageable levels. Additionally there is a proposition that allows the government to repay the debt in an effort to reduce amounts paid periodically as interests on these loans. Observing the total amount payable towards settling the entire National Debt, it is evident that the accumulative interest is very high, and it siphons the nationââ¬â¢s resources and contributing to the greater budget deficit. Therefore, proposed that the

Difference Between Mash And Star Topology Computer Science Essay
Difference Between Mash And Star Topology Computer Science Essay In this part of the assignment, the difference between Mash and Star Topology will be examined. Additionally, the Network topology in general will be discussed in detailed with other network topology. Network topology is one of the most significant topics to learn before start building up computer network. Network topology is the physical arrangement of nodes, A node is any network device, such as a computer, work station, or switching unit. Basically a topology describes how a network is linked , it is the structure of the network. In networking topologies are very important because they have significant role on flexibility and reliability. Firstly, Mash topology is to be examined. According to Ratliff (2000) Mash topology is â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦The most basic type of topology to understand is the mesh topology. In a pure mesh network, each node has a physical connection to all other nodes.â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¦.. while Star topology is â⬠¦consists of a central hub with spokes extending out from it and terminating in nodes .. Mesh is a type of network topology which â⬠¦can use an alternativeâ⬠¦route to deliver data If any of the cables fail. In that point mesh network topology is one of the most reasonable network topology. However when number of nodes increases, mesh topology becomes unwieldy and expensive. Another negative aspect is requires too many cable works. Because mesh topology requires more cable than other topologies. The equation of Mesh network is Ln=[Nn(Nn-1)] in this equation Ln stands for number of links required and Nn stands for number of nodes in the network. On the other hand Star topology as it has mentioned above every node linked to the central device called, hub or switch. Also star topologies are usually used for LAN networking and it is one of the most popular topology today. Altough The star is one of the older topologies. Star topologies are very easy to install and wire. In addition detecting fault removing faulty parts is easier in star topology. Another good advantage of using star topology is if any node fails or is removed it doesnt affect network so Network never fails Unless central device or hub fails. To compare star and mesh topology there one major difference which is about coverage of the network mesh topologies commonly used for WAN (Wide area networks) on the other hand Star is commonly used for LAN (Local are networks).Another difference is to setup star network you need a central hub or switch to link nodes together. But to setup mesh topology you dont need central device because In mesh topology computers or nodes connected directly to each other on many alternative routes. Mesh topology network failure tolarence is less than star topology because even if more than one cable fails system still can run. However in star topology is the same unless central device fails network can still run smoothly. Furthermore, there are three more network topologies which are Ring network topology, Bus network topology and Tree network topology. Firstly Ring Network topology is to be examined. In ring topology nodes linked to each other and data are sent around the circle from node to node. In recent years ring network topology was popular in LAN networking and two popular networking technologies which are ARCNET and TOKEN used ring topology. According to Ratliff (2000) In ring topology Message transmission can use one of two techniques. In the first, the transmitting node gains access to the ring and sends data to the receiving node; the receiving removes the message from the ring. In second technique, the sender transmits the message, and the receiver makes a copy of the message rather than removing it from the ring. The message then returns to the transmitter and serves as an acknowledgement that it was received. Ring network topology is very easy to extend. All you need to do is break the ring and plug in node. As you can see easy to make changes, makes ring topology very flexible. In Ring network you dont need network server to manage connectivity between the nodes because nodes connected each other with wires. Also performance is better than a star network if network is under heavy network load because data passes in only one direction. However there are significant negative aspects. The major problem is If one node fails, all network system might fail. Another negative aspect of ring networks is that if a node is added, the network must stop working temporarily. Because when a node is added firstly you need to cut the connection and add the node. Bus network topology is one of the oldest topologies in networking history. Bus topology requires one single cable which can be inches long or miles long that links all nodes on a network. According to Lowe (2005) In a bus topology, every node on the network can see every packet thats sent on the cable. Each node looks at each packet to determine whether the packet is intended for it. If so, the node claims the packet .If not, the node ignores the packet. This way, each computer can respond to data sent to it and ignore data sent to other computers on the network. Bus network topology performance is depends on the number of the nodes, less node means more performance. The reason for that all computers use/share same cable for data transfer on the network. Also bus topologys data transfer rate is slower than other network topologies. However beside those disadvantages there are also several advantages of bus network topology. Bus topologies are very easy to install and extend. In addition Bus topologies are cheapest network topology if you compare with other topologies. And its very easy to identity wire faults. To sum up network topologies are base of the network design. It is possible to built better network topology if you have good knowledge of these network topologies which has mentioned above. Also you need to have the knowledge of each network devices to use them properly for your network needs. Not good configured network can cause problems such as waste of time and energy. So basically understanding network topologies and devices is key of building good network. Part B In this part of assignment software and hardware for business systems for accounting business activities will be examined with cost/benefit and importance to the success of the business in report form. INTRODUCTION Today computers have become very popular in every kind of sector. In business area there are many different and specific software for every need like the company or market sector. Attitude in All Quiet on the Western Front :: essays research papers
All Quiet on the Western Front All Quiet on the Western Front shows the change in attitudes of the men before and during the war. This novel is able to portray the overwhelming effects and power war has to deteriorate the human spirit. Starting out leaving you're home and family and ready to fight for you country, to ending up tired and scarred both physically and mentally beyond description. At the beginning of the novel nationalist feelings are present through pride of Paul and the rest of the boys. However at the end of the war it is apparent how pointless war really is. All Quiet on the Western Front is a novel that greatly helps in the understanding the effects war. The novel best shows the attitudes of the soldiers before the war and during the war. Before the war there are high morals and growing nationalist feelings. During the war however, the soldiers discover the trauma of war. They discover that it is a waste of time and their hopes and dreams of their life fly further and further away. The remains of Paul Baumer's company had moved behind the German front les for a short rest at the beginning of the novel. After Baumer became Paul's first dead schoolmate, Paul viewed the older generation bitterly, particularly Kantorek, the teacher who convinced Paul and his classmates to join the military. " While they taut that duty to one's country is the greatest thing, we already that death-throes are stronger.... And we saw that there was nothing of their world left. We were all at once terribly alone, and alone we must see it through."(P. 13) Paul fe lt completely betrayed. " We will make ourselves comfortable and sleep, and eat as much as we can stuff into our bellies, and drink and smoke so that hours are not wasted. Life is short." (P 139) Views of death and becoming more comfortable with their destiny in the r became more apparent throughout the novel. Paul loses faith in the war in each passing day. * Through out the novel it was evident that the war scarred the soldiers permanently mentally. Everyone was scared to go to war when it started. Young recruits were first sent because the veterans knew they were going to come back dead. "When we runt again, although I am very excited, I suddenly think: "where's Himmelstoss?" Quickly I jump back into the dug-out and find him with a small scratch lying in a corner pretending to be wounded.
